Youth Leadership for Children’s Rights

At BT, child and youth participation are not just buzz-phrases. We believe that our work cannot, and should not, be done without the active participation of children and youth. Our Youth Leadership for Children’s Rights program involves various components that are designed to give children and young people opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills to be effective leaders, actively participating in advocacy for children’s rights.

The 3 main components to our YLCR program are Children’s Rights Ambassador Training, Youth Action and Children’s Councils & Assemblies

  • Children's Rights Ambassador Training

Through our aged based Children’s Rights Ambassador clubs - Junior Changemakers, Peer Advocates and Rights Defenders, children learn about rights and issues that affect them.

This program is co-led with child and youth facilitators.

  • Youth Action

We believe in enabling youth to take action on the issues that concern them. Youth organize and run activities including Community Days, Sports Competitions and Clean Up activities.

  • Children's Councils & Assemblies

Through elected children’s councils and general assemblies of children, children and youth directly help to conceptualize, monitor, evaluate and run BT’s programs.

Independent Living Skills Program

Growing up can be hard work, especially if you don’t have strong role models around you. At Bahay Tuluyan we aim to give young people support and guidance so that they can become happy, healthy adults. Our Independent Living Skills Program is organized into three main areas - Life Skills Education, Vocational Training and Work & Life Transitions. Youth engage in the parts of the program that meet their needs and help them achieve their goals.

What I like most about this program…

is that we are taught how to be independent, how to budget and, most importantly, how to stand on our own two feet.

Social Enterprise & Self-Reliance

By far the hardest part of our work is finding the funds to keep it going. In the same way that we want to teach young people to be independent, so we want Bahay Tuluyan to be independent.

Our two social enterprises - Makabata Guesthouse & Cafe and Bahay Tuluyan Nature Farms - are designed to not only provide life-changing skills and training for young people but also to be a lifeline for Bahay Tuluyan’s programs and services.

100% of proceeds from these social enterprises are put back into the work of Bahay Tuluyan.

Children’s Rights Institute

Founded in 2019, the Children’s Rights Institute is a social enterprise designed to build the capacity of adults to protect the rights of children. It builds on Bahay Tuluyan’s many years of experience in working with vulnerable children and youth. Our modules on UNCRC were first developed and rolled out for teachers in 2005. Over the intervening years the depth and breadth of our training courses increased along with the demand for such education, until the decison was made to establish as a social enterprise.
